February 18
Porter to Thomas Fork
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
5500-9780, angles over 40°, north and west facing aspects
Snow conditions
Storm totals were around 16", less down low, add an inch or two up high. There were a couple of density changes, with the lightest snow on top. Bonding was good, settlement eliminated much of the sluffing. A natural slide cycle during the storm did produce some long running slides on the steepest north facing. Cornices have grown quite large above lee facing aspects
and were sensitive to skier weight.
Weather
Overcast skies for much of the day, with some partial clearing. Instability showers added, perhaps, an inch of light density. Winds were light and temperatures moderate.
Evaluation
Snow is mostly stable. There may be a few active wind drifts, especially at upper elevations in exposed terrain. Day time heating could also play a role by afternoon.
